The performance review is a standard part of a traditional review cycle, which often also includes a mid-year evaluation and an end-of-year assessment. Goals are set at the beginning of the year, evaluated halfway through in a mid-year review, and assessed at year-end. It is a conversation between manager and employee. A good conversation addresses the employee's performance, development, job satisfaction and growth opportunities. An important difference from a formal assessment is that this conversation also looks ahead and encourages two-way dialogue. In other words: it's not just about evaluation, but also about looking forward.

At Learned, we recommend striving for a continuous dialogue. By engaging in ongoing conversations with your employees, we see that they gain a better understanding of how they can contribute to the organisation and become more actively engaged in their development. A first step towards continuous dialogue can be to modernise existing conversations.
